engine torque rod bushing 850

I'd be willing to bet that it is a sign of a worn out bushing. I'm no Volvo expert --though it seems from the amount that you've owned, you might qualify as one. :) Maybe the shake at startup is just a trait of the engine, but I think 850s and 70 series have more or less similar engines (aside from differing turbo configurations) and the same torque rod/bushing assembly.

As far as the duration of cranking before starting, I have no clue as I don't have different cars to go by. I would hypothesize that it may have something to do with compression ratio or a different starter motor for a different year.
