hitch fit 850 1995

I finally figured out from Volvo that my '95 850 has a factory hitch that is a size unique to older Volvos. Unfortunately I bought a 1.5 inch hitch mount bike rack (since they only come in two sizes). I am wondering if anyone has attempted to convert 1.5 inch accessories to fit into these receivers (about 1.75 inch. I'm considering welding some angle iron on the rack, or else seeing if I can switch the receiver part of the hitch with a 1.5 receiver. Am I the only one who has had this problem?
