I don't entirely agree. I found my RWD Volvo 760T to cost as much to keep going as my FWD 850T. The RWD are easier for the DIYer to work on, the FWD seem to be comparable complexity to other FWD cars of similar size and features. It is also not so easy to find RWD Volvos with any kind of reasonable mileage anymore, at least in Chicago.
I would say, have an independent mechanic you trust for service, the dealer will hose you big time. This is true for any car, but not any IM will work on Volvos.
Maitenance is apparently the key to keeping the FWD cars running well. Keep up with it and the car will last. Ignore it and you will die. The RWD cars did seem to be a bit more forgiving in this regard.
The 850R is a fast, stiff car, the R is a high performance model. If the ride is too stiff, look for a non R car.
Sounds like a good price, I would probably buy it. Good luck.
