We have 94 850 5-speed non-turbo wagon that gets 30 mpg and a '93 850 non-turbo auto that get 28 mpg.

V40 is built on same frame as ford escort was. Not sure of mileage , guess about the same, but I know v40 marked the start of Volvo's decline as Ford's influence was felt.

Look for a good 850 or 98 or 99 v70 - in my opinion.
