I still occasionally get a mechanic who tells me very knowingly not to ever put synthetic oil in a used car engine, because all the seals will leak. Apparently there was a tendency for that to happen when synthetics were first introduced, but the manufacturers fixed the problem a good 15 years ago or so with some gasket-conditioning additives.
Those same mechanics will probably also tell you to never put a car battery on a concrete floor because it will discharge the battery. (apparently an issue 100 years ago or so when battery cases were made out of leaky wood and asphalt.)
