If the check engine light doesn't come on when you turn the key to II, then it is burned out. Blame the PO for not fixing the fault. It is a PITA to replace the bulb. Check bay13 for replacing instrument lights, it is quite a procedure. While there, replace ALL of the other bulbs. You don't want to do this again. Unfortunately, the only source I found for these bulbs is at the dealer, they like to add a zero to all of the small things they sell.
As for the O2 sensors, I would replace both. I would NOT move one to the other port, that won't work very well. FCP Groton has them for about $140 and $180, rear and front. Look around, your 1997 is more expensive than my 1995.
