There is a bracket on the left side of the starter. It is so tight in there you probably didn't notice it but feel around on the L side of the starter and you will feel a bracket that mounts to the engine with one bolt. It is hard to see but it is there. Sounds like this is where your problem lies. so look to the left, get the bolt off and you should befine. You cant get the other side of the bracket off the starter until the starter is out of the vehical....good luck
