The Volvo is a high maintenance and expensive to repair vehicle. The 1993-1995 models are even more prone to problems as these 850s were the first venture into front wheel drive by volvo engineers who were busy with design trial and error in this experimental vehicle for volvo. The 96 and 97 850s and the S70 have performed somewhat better. Unless you are very handy and have a friend who is an after hours volvo tech, get a Camry or Accord which have 20 years of reliability testing each and solid reputations in all the usual consumer magazines.

PS: I treat my 850 well and have averaged $1200 per year in repairs for the last three years. It is fun to drive, nevertheless, you must pay for the privelege.
