timing question 850 1997

I wonder how they changed the timing? Normally it can't be messed with. You have a crank position sensor and all the timing curve and mapping is done by the ECU. I would ask what they actually did. Could have been a crank position sensor failing and they messed with something else to screw up the motor. This was the Volvo dealership that did this?
