I have an S60 2001. Next time when the cooling fan comes on, go into the car and see if the air-cond is blowing. Mine comes on once in a while. Enquired with an 'expert' and he said that this is normal. On my car, it is claimed that there is a system that works like a "dryer". Humidity is created on the 'pollen filter' once the AC has been used and then switched off. This fan comes on to get it dried, so that there will not be a humidity "smell".
But this is an optional system, if you do not want this system, an authorised Volvo dealer can switch the function "off" easily by diagnostic computer (called VADIS). But have been recommended you to leave it "on"
