1. You have either a GL or a GLT; the difference is only the options package. The GL or Standard model has no special name plate; that is most likely what you have.
2. You don't have a turbo. As you surmised, GLTs did not have a turbo until 1997.
3. Take a look at edmunds.com (http://www.edmunds.com/used/1996/volvo/850/index.html?tid=edmunds.u.mmindex.content.num1.0.volvo*) to see the standard options for base and GLT models. You could probably make a GLT out of a base model by ordering the options individually. If you have a moonroof, it might not be a GLT, but if it does not have a moonroof, it is not a base model.
