Thanks guys,
The suggestions you all made paid great dividends. The ground issue was the problem and the fix was easy once given some direction where to look. Seems that the ground wire was simply unhooked at the block in front of the battery. Thanks again and I hope to be able to contribute to the considerable knowledge base here as my own knowledge of these cars grows.
