I use a synthetic oil and change the oil once a year, which for me is about 5000 miles. For good measure I change the oil filter at 6 months. I have had the oil tested and based on the results even this is conservative. I also have a 3 mile trip to work.

With your type of driving the main concern is moisture contamination. If you get your car up to operating temperature once a week and do a good ten mile run, then you could probably extend your interval even on regular oil. See bobistheoilguy.com for more.
