I discovered the same problem. I use Back to Black and a small hand brush that cleans the wax out of the crevasses. This works better if the wax is fresh. I think the idea with the masking tape is a bit over the top, a bit resource and time intensive and may risk damage if a blade is used to trim the tape around curves.
