Timing belt change 850

Aviator--give a little thought to changing out the serpentine belt at the time you do the timing belt. Just good preventive maintenance. Be aware, if you aren't already, that Volvo changed the configuration of how the serpentine belt goes around those six or so pulleys. If you don't know it, and try reinstalling the new belt to the old way, you will discover the belt is a tad bit too long. Go to volvospeed.com and click on the Bay 13 logo, which will take you into a menu of half a dozen choices, including one called "repair and maintenance," and under that "engine" which will show you how to route the new belt on an 850. There is also a post on how to route the belt on a 70 series, so don't confuse the two. It took me an hour of dinking around to route the belt in the new fashion Volvo dictates. There is a trick to it, very simple to explain. Put the belt around all the pulleys that have a slight shoulder on them. The last pulley, on the inside of the circle of pulleys, is the idler pulley, and it has no shoulder. It's a very tight fit with the new belt, and if you try slipping it over the last pulley that has a shoulder it, it will cause you all kinds of grief. If you get it around all the others and save the idler for last, it's a five minute job. Your only other problem is that 3/4 inch square hole in the tensioner pulley. A normal 3/4" drive socket is too wide to slip in there. Be innovative. I found a square washer that fit perfectly in the square hole on the diagonal. I hammered it into a box end wrench of the right size and it worked. On most of the 850's there is a hole in the idler pulley mounting and the block that, when you pull the pulley back to release the tension, you can slip a nail into, to hold it in place. The engine coolant container pulls straight up and if you disconnect the wire at the bottom, you can lay it over on its side without disconnected the house, and it will give you more room to get the tensioner pulley pulled back and locked into place with a nail.
