jet engine sound from my T5 s70 S70 1998

My t5 has an unusual sound that has just recently started. Sounds like a jet engine "spooling up" under the hood. It happens mostly in cold engine state but has happened at other times also. People can hear it well outside the car. Has about 135k on it. It lasts for about 30 seconds to one minute. It almost sounds like a fan, but the fan comes on normally and it sounds very different.
