Air Pump. Mine started getting noisy last year. Ran it for a few months till it failed all togethor. Ran it for another 10 months with the check engine light on before I eventually repaired it. Apparently the SAS valve leaks and condensation runs down to the air pump and causes it to fail. It will not hurt the car to drive it if it fails. The air pump blows air on to the cadalitic convertor during certain situations to super heat the exhaust and reduce emissions. The air pump is not really required. If you do change the air pump, you will also have to change the SAS valve or the new pump will fail sooner that normal. The joys of a 98 Volvo.
