Bjoreb,
The improvement in vision stems from two things: your vision is nolonger "distracted" by all the chips and scratches; secondly, with the old window, the afternoon sun glare against all the scratches and chips was murder. The scratches and chips seemed to form a "haze" as the afternoon sun rays reflected through the windshield.
The difference is so significant, that I'm going to have the windshield on my other '96 950 GLT replaced too. This car has 153,000 miles on the original windshield, and contain many scratches and chips. Not as bad as my wife's '96 850 (she had over 200,000 miles on the original windshield when it was replaced). I hope my answer is helpful.
