Bill,
I don't think the leak is large enough to go negative atmospheres and introduce fresh air. Not running for a year will allow the bearing seal to dry and let it escape that way also. Must of us have minor leaks in the evaporator, but rather that spend big bucks to replace that, I just add another can.

You could also push dowm on the schrader valve, where you add gas and see if there is any pressure(use a very long handle screw driver, don't want to get frostbite).
