I jumped out the low pressure sensor and sure enough the compressor engaged, so I suppose I'll be buying some 134a. Thanks everyone for your help!

One last question:

I see there are several 'varieties' of R-134A available including oil, leak stopper, UV dye, "maxi-cool", "high-mileage", etc.

Any recommendations?
