Oops, what about a test drive - didn't catch this problem?

Well it sounds like the very common PNP switch (neutral position switch) failure. Do a search on this forum for "PNP" or "flashing arrow" for symptoms... it costs about $250 to replace the switch at an indie Volvo place in my area. If that is the problem it's not too bad, mine had it and shifting was fine after the switch replacement.
