Yet another A/C question 850 1996

Before I evacuate or replace hoses, etc..., if I had a leak in the hoses, wouldn't the pressure be reading low? I hooked a gauge up to the low pressure port and it was reading in a decent range, so I don't want to add more coolant, for fear of damaging something.
