It is possible that your compressor clutch is badly worn. Check the gap between the clutch plates with feeler gauges. When new it should be about 40thou (.04") If it is significantly more, the clutch coil may not be able to pull it in.
Try this: With the engine cold, switch on the A/C and check to see whether the compressor clutch is engaged and spinning.
If it is, once the engine is hot, try again. If it is not engaged, with a long stick, VERY CAREFULLY give the end of the clutch a little tap. If it clicks in, the clutch is probably worn.
It can be adjusted without disconnecting the A/C pipes.
