No, the car is not reliable in its current state. Caliper will seize without warning. I had the same experience (but I use my brakes lightly so I didn't get smoke, just heat). In one case it went away for a month. The caliper is sticking and needs help. You may be able to rebuild it - I bought a reman one from a chain for $42 - in my opinion better than chancing rebuild, 2 hours of labor and parts, if available. Easy to replace.
