Long-term, vexing puzzle: Intermittent no-crank

You may be onto something here....I've discovered that when experience this problem, I can disconnect the ground terminal from the battery, replace it, and then it starts right up. At least it happened this way twice so far.

I wonder if I have a faulty ground-to-body connection?

By the way, what is a shot ballast resistor?
