*Update*
Had it back to my dealer. Gave them some suggestions from Brickboard and also VVspy.
They checked those out but found that the coil spring rubs against it's bottom collar very slightly upon compression. Apparently the coil expands in diameter slightly causing it to contact a part of the collar mounting it to the bottom of the shock.
The fix was to bend a small portion of the collar out of the way. All is quiet now.
If you do a search on strange front end noises you will get at least 10 or so different causes. Here's #11!
