things to look out for with the 70's cis b23....been sitting 200 1978

alrighty guys i've finally decided to pick up that '78 242 flathood i found, i know it's been sitting for a few years. This car has the older style CIS b23 with the single fuel pump. is there anything i need to take a close look at initially after i drag it home? i've heard things about these fuel pumps going bad after sitting among other usually fuel related issues. any advice would be awesome, thanks again!

CIS B23??? Non-U.S. Car? 200 1978

My son once converted a B23 to K-jet by putting injectors in the head (same basic casting as B21, 4 holes needed) and fitting the B21 manifold. Much cheaper than IPD's "big bore" kit and worked real well.*

I recently got an '80 240 that hadn't run in 10 years. The last 3 years (maybe more) were outside in central NY. It started and ran pretty good on what was in the tank after I replaced the snapped timing belt and made sure everything was free to turn.

Some kind of tank cleaning is a good idea though. I pumped it dry and "refreshed" the tank pump, filter sock, and feed hose -- then put fresh gas in. A few days later it went nuts when the control plunger stuck (partway up) and let fuel get to the injectors when just running the pumps with a jumper (not even cranking).

It was a chore to get the FD out and plunger freed up, but it runs nice now.

*That engine is still stashed in my garage, in case anyone in Central NY is interested

Must be a typo or misconception on chris' part. B23E w/K-Jet was used in '81-'83 Canadian market cars. As far as I know that was the only mechanical FI B23. At least in North America.

If you can get it running you're all set. I'd recommend draining the fuel then change the fuel filter before trying to start it, and if you're really ambitious pull the sender unit and look into the tank for any signs of loose rust laying around. That'll really muck up k-jet. The metering plate may be gummed up, if so get that gunk cleaned out. And watch for leaks at the fuel pump, as you mentioned (though if it leaks don't panic, let it sit for a few days and the fuel you've flowed through it may help soften up and swell the dried-up seal again - a little piece of wisdom I picked up here a while back). I once had a k-jet 142 that started leaking fuel at the injectors, turned out the injector fittings had actually rusted through. If it starts, and runs, and doesn't leak, then don't worry.

If it has been sitting for a few years, drain the gas out of the tank. Most of the garbage and water will be on the bottom, which is where you want the siphon hose anyway. After you have put fresh gas in, unplug the fuel line at the injectors and let the pump push about a quart of gas through the line. It will be quick, so use a gallon jug just in case.
If the pump sounds lke it is spinning OK, but the delivery is slow, change the filter.

Good call Klaus - I think there's a fitting at the firewall (actually your filter may be on the firewall, I'm not sure though) where you can disconnect the supply line to purge the lines and avoid driving any dirt into the fuel distributor and CPR.

ah sounds good guys! well this one does have a blown head gasket. the engine is still all together, but it was parked after it blew so i'm wondering if there may be some problems related with that, but i will do the fuel stuff before an initial startup, and by the way the fuel filter is on the firewall good call.
