I think the TDIs are great, but dollar for dollar, if your choices are to save a little on gas or just not spend the $7000, then just forget the VW.
Trust me, maintenance is maintenance when it comes to brakes, CV axles, etc. No big deal there. But diesel maintenance (serious stuff) is NOT the same as gas maintenance, and a lot of places screw it up enough to penalize you down the road.
It is only my opinion, but you may get almost twice the mileage with a TDI, but you will be buying something that will need something as well. It won't pay you back. It may however provide you with many more headaches. There are a lot of factors at play such as if you drive 100,000 miles per year, or 5,000 miles. And if you do drive 100k/year, I'd suggest just getting a completely different car, not a VW in the first place. A good old Toyota Corolla will be a better investment, trust me. I'm all about Volvos and everything, but I'm also all about other cars, and VW is not top on my list. Just my opinion.
