Suspension mounting bracket 200 1986

While having some other work done on my 86 240 s/w, I found out a bolt from the rear mounting bracket on the left lower control arm was missing. The other bolt had loosened. I plan on replacing this. My question is: is the frame threaded or does it have a nut mounted inside of it? If not how do you get a nut inside the frame? What size bolt is it? Thanks in advance for any help.

pat,

Your talking about the bolt (fastener) that goes through the shock absorber, and lower control arm ? If so, it is a pass through long bolt with a sleave between the two sides of the lower control arm. If one side is loose...tighten it. If the other side is missing, replace it with a grade 8 (??) or better. Get one (2), don't forget the spacer, from any of the Volvo parts houses (FCP Groton...IPD....Swedish Engineering....etc.). Top shock bolt (stud) is a threaded stud into the chassis. If that's broken, there should be a hex flange at the base that you can put a socket on it to remove. Replacement would have to come from one of the above type parts suppliers.

Enjoy.

The frame is threaded for the THREE bolts that mount the bracket to it. I can't remember the size. I'd remove the loose one and take it to the hardware or parts store to get a duplicate (one of of the correct grade as well as the correct size). If the Volvo were my only transport, I'd drive it to the parts store, remove the loose bolt and get a duplicate, then install them both before departing.

If the bolts you mention are the two that mount the A-arm to the bracket, they are secured with nuts. Small fingers required for the rear one, or you can temporarily remove the rear bracket, mount it to the A-arm with bolt and nut through its bushing, then remount its body on the frame with the three bolts.

The Bentley manual specifies the torques for all the front suspension bolts, and cautions that the A-arm bolts should be torqued with the car's weight on its wheels, lest the front bushings be clamped in the wrong position, setting them up for early failure.

Maybe someone else has the size and torques at hand.
