I never found a quick way to deal with the flame trap system - but then I'm not known for quickness.
Have a look in the 700-900 FAQ. There are several methods described for getting at the breather box. Some folks like to remove the intake manifold - I went another route.
I used the method where you remove the idle air control to get access to the breather box. I removed the throttle body at the same time (buy the TB-to-manifold gasket first, install gasket without any extra sealant) and cleaned both the TB and the IAC mechanism. The whole project took a Saturday morning.
