Torque Converter Lockup? 900 1992

1992 960 Sedan. Just found the site. Gotta love you guys/gals. Remind me to replace my timing belt later this year. Anyhow I have a problem when driving long distances and coming to a stop. Feels like I need to "push the clutch in", except that I have an auto tranny. The rpm's drop and want to stop the engine. Everything I know says the torque converter is not disnegaging. I have little to no records on the car. Fluid level is fine. Just starting to work on Volvos. Hate the Torx bits, I am slowly replacing ALL of them, pick a part. So is there an electrical torque converter lock up on this beast? Would replacing the filter/fluid help if the converter is going bad? Please allow me to apologize in advance. I have 4 brothers, we had 2 cars, both Vegas, and I am a certified Vega mechanic. So you can tell I'm good at replacing engines, trannys, and lots of bondo. (lol) Any help would be appreciated.

The transmission problem sounds like you have a sticking lock up solenoid. Not sure from the information you provide. How many miles on the? Has the transmission fluid been replaced recently? Are you getting an up arrow flashing in the dash?
I would start by draining the refilling the transmission a few times with regular Dextron ATF over the span of a few hundred miles. This should renew the vast majority of fluid in the transmission. Also you can work through some of the diagnostics for the transmission found in this document.

    Good luck

OK, maybe I should explain. I replace all the torx screws after drilling them out and using a screw extractor. It took me 5 hours to replace the spark plugs. I had to deal with those 8 cute little bolts retaining the spark plug cover. I never had that problem with a Vega, I just broke all the bolts off as I wnet along.

    Torque Converter Lockup? 900 1992

    Hi

I'm intrigued in replacing the Torx. I guess if you can get the correct tensile bolt or whatever, it'll be OK. But, my understanding of Torx biggest advantage is the ability to get correct and reproducible torque every time. Which Hex can't do.

Not sure of the Tranny, but seeing the fluid goes into the Torque Converter, it'd be a cheap fix if it did it. Possibly needs a flush as well.

My 940 is running on synthetic, and it made a big difference to the smoothness of changes.

    regards

re '...I am a certified Vega mechanic...' Huh? 900 1992

You mean as in Chevy Vega? :-) Gee, I don't know if you should brag about having own any -- although, it's not really your fault -- you didn't design it, did you?

Only good thing I remember was the "Cosworth" engine in a special run of them, right? You didn't happen to own one of them, did you?

Anyway, may I ask your opinion, why change the torx fasteners -- they're less likely to slip (more torque can be applied to them)? If you've already got the socket and bits ("E" and "T", right?) in order to loosen them (to swap), why not keep them? Do they have some disadvantage (other than the need to own a set, which I already had to buy)?

    Thanks.
