One thing nobody mentioned, that is a possibility, is a sticky ignition switch. Not returning from the Start position- had 2 cars do this recently, a 90 and an 88. A little nudge back towards position II could be all that's needed.
If this does fix it, plan on replacing the ignition switch one'a'these days. It's separate from the lock cylinder, so no keys need to be changed. It's cheaper than you think it's going to be, from the dealer.

If they were all working and then, suddenly not working...
In your place I would check fuse 10 (power windows). Also check fuse 12 (power window relay). If they are intact take them out them out anyway and clean the contact surfaces, both an the fuse and fuse block.
If you still don't have operation find the relay. You'll have to remove the glovebox. It will be to the left of the opening. This is what you're looking for.

Possibly it will have a metal case but the blades are arranged like the one in this pic and will have the terminal #'s you see in the pic. Pull the wires for the 30 & 87 terminal. Connect them. If the windows work, replace the relay.
If not report back.

My brain is addled. You don't pull the wires. You remove the connector and jump the 30 and 87 receptacles.
Anyway, you get the idea.

Yes, if none of your windows work and they all worked yesterday the most likely culprit is a fuse. Often times it is the same fuse as the a/c, number nine if I recall correctly.

That is one of the ironies that should be added to the volvo humor list somehow.
It is true, if you lose the AC fuse your windows won't go down either!

Any suggestions when only the driver's switches will operate the windows?? I can work all windows from there, but the other switches don't.
I already cleaned the driver's switch that enables/disables the other switches. Also cleaned the other switches. Checked for driver's lockout switch working with a meter too, it seemed OK.
OK, I didn't open up the switches, couldn't seem to find the trick to do that. I got plenty contact cleaner inside them, and worked the switches a lot to try clean them up.
Maybe the wire passing through the rubber tunnel, or maybe something else??

It could be, but usually the driver's door is the most often operated and first to have the wires fail.
But I think you still have pitted contacts in your switches. Even for the remote door switches to operate, the circuit includes contacts in the driver's door switches. Most problems are resolved by disassembling the driver's door switch module, then disassembling each switch, cleaning, polishing, and regreasing.

I guess that's what I'm going to have to do.
- open up the individual driver's switches and clean/lube.
How do the switches come apart?
I keep thinking it should be obvious but I never did get one open.

I have a 1990 240 and my problem with the windows turned out to be the wiring harness right at the spot where the harness gets bent between the door and the rest of the body. If you are sure it's not the fuse... Open the door, see the heavy hinge, see the rubber wrap which covers the bunch of wires. Continue to open the rubber and peek inside for any broken wires. I had to re-solder 4 wires...I used tie wraps to close the rubber. I suppose you might find better ways to close it up.

I know sometimes when this happens to me it's just a bad/dirty connection
in the switch on my 91' 245 wagon. Will the window go down from the switch on the door the window is in or is it just from the switch on the drivers door?
cheers,
karl
