The turbo wagons came with 195/60-15's and Virgos. The later cars are set up differently, intentionally changing speedometer readings for sedan and wagon speedos based on identical axle rpm's.
I ran 205/65-15's on Virgos on my 88 245 for the summer and 195/65-15 snows for winter.
Seem to work well and handling is stable.
For some more info on the available replacements for 185R-14 tires, see this site for VW Buses, which take the same size tires for some applications:
http://www.busdepot.com
They sell some reinforced-sidewall models suitable for Bus, Vanagon, and Volvo 245 applications.
