Rough Cold Idle 900 1993

Hi everyone,

I've been having a problem with my 1993 Volvo 940 NA with 131,000 miles for quite a while now involving cold (temperature wise) starts.

My problem exactly matches the symptoms in the FAQ relating to the 940 Turbo HERE, besides the fact that my car isn't a Turbo and has a Regina fuel system. The idling is rough for around 45 seconds to a minute and this rough idling sends the tachometer bouncing (and sitting inside the cabin feels like an amusement park ride). The cold temperatures that I'm talking about range from around 40F down to the coldest of 20F (it really doesn't get too cold here).

The other day; however, I shifted out of park and gave it gas and the car immediately quit. It started right up again, I gave it a little gas and it almost quit (tach dropped to 100/200RPM and the dash lights dimmed). I let it idle for a little bit longer, and it ran fine otherwise. I'm not sure what this was all about as that's the only time I can remember my Volvo stalling.

I've also been noticing that, only sometimes, when I start the car (cold and hot) sometimes the idle will surge around 1500RPM for a few seconds and then go back down to normal idle (which seems to be around 900RPM). Is this normal? I don't remember this happening before, but maybe it's just my imagination. My moms Nissan Titan (big V8) adjusts the idle when its cold to around 1000RPM (instead of its normal 650RPM) when it's cold. I'm not really sure how either engines work, but should the Volvo do something similar?

I read on another Volvo forum about the possibility of a cylinder misfiring when the car (and temperature) is cold. I'm not sure if that information is correct, but I'll try checking tomorrow morning.

Any suggestions or points to the FAQ that I may have missed would be greatly appreciated.
