Same problem that I have I cant fix it and I don't have any idea whats wrong with it. Mines an 82 245 wagon and the thing is a pain in the ass when it comes to being cold. I have done so much work to it and I can't localize this problem, the wierd thing is that if it is above 30 degrees the car wont high idle and I have to hold my foot at about 1500 for a bit untill it wants to run right. Now if it in the 20's it high idles and runs great. The only thing I could throw out there is maybe a bad coolant temp sensor or thermal time sensor (TTS is under the intake CTS is at the front of the motor on the head). The CTS controls the fuel mixture when the coolant temp is below 98 degrees it enriches the mixture for the high idle. I changed mine but I think I have a bad connection or a bad sensor I just don't want to deal with it right now.
One other thing is that she may have a vaccuum leak, look at the distributer from the drivers side, now look past it and you will see a few little vac lines make sure they are all connected. I had one pop off and the car would die when I started it when it was cold. Might have backfired and knocked of a line without her knowing. Mine did it in the morning and ran fine till I got to work and then had problems when I went to leave. Also have someone inspect the flame trap it may have came loose and needs to be replaced.
