Resolution (I hope): intermittent hesitation and bad idle, code 113 on socket 2 200 1992

Hello All:

Just a quick report back on the problems I have been having since last Monday with my '92 245, which initially wouldn't idle and would only run at a maximum speed of about 40km/h. It died on the side of the road and had to be towed home.

As soon as the tow truck dropped it in my driveway, I pulled the connector on the AMM and it ran again. It still hesitated, though...

I dropped in a different fuel system relay-- a little better, but still hesitating on occasion, with occasional surging idle.

I tried a power stage (no change), an idle air valve (no significant change, but it was very clean so I left the replacement in).

I checked all the fuses and the fusebox (no fault found).

I swapped the fuel pressure regulator (no change).

I checked the operation of the transfer pump in the tank by listening with a mechanic's stethoscope-- it worked fine.

I pulled the white label -561 and installed a -951 from a pick-and-pull donor that was marked as "running on arrival". A bit better drivability, but nothing earth-shattering...

I went to test the O2 sensor and inadvertently disconnected it-- I noticed the car ran better immediately-- strange, since it was a 6 month old Bosch replacement unit, carefully crimped with quality connectors and shrink wrapped.

I took measurements on the sensor, and got something weird-- voltages that were intermittently as high as about 1.4V! This was bizarre-- I suspected that my meter needed a new battery-- some cheap VOMs get really inaccurate when the batteries get old. I checked the meter against some reference DC voltages, and it seemed accurate.

I found one reference in the archives (the search works SO much better now!) to an 02 sensor with high outputs. I happened to have a spare Bosch 02 sensor waiting to be installed in my 945, so I put it in the 245. Everything seems fine now...

Anybody else ever see the 113 code along with abnormal 02 sensor voltages?

    Hello Herb,

Did you check resistance values on the O2 sensor heater ,and/or operational voltages with the heater disconnected?

Could be a fubar heater circuit screwing up sensor voltages. Another quality new part?

I didn't bother looking at the heater circuit carefully-- all I did was measure the voltage. I found a post by Art Benstein about thinking a similar measurement on another person's car was due to stray voltage from the heater circuit ending up on the sensor line was a possibility-- on this guy's car the sensor line had 2.5V! I just drove the car to and from the train station, and it behaved just fine with the new 02 sensor in place.

I think your diagnosis of a "quality" new part is on the money-- sadly, Bosch isn't what it used to be...

Wow. Interesting. *Thanks* for updating with the solution! This'll be a valuable piece of data for the archives!

As for the 1-1-3 code, it's not surprising... actually kind of expected. This code is for an "injector failure". However, the ECU doesn't really have the information it needs (like fuel rail pressure) to make that call. In practice, the 1-1-3 code is sorta synonymous with the major mixture related codes (2-3-x). When something else is afoul (like the AMM, O2 sensor, vacuum leak), the computer can't get the mixture into check, but the computer "assumes" it's getting reliable info from the different sensors (even though one may be bad), so it thinks something must be wrong with one or more injectors, and it sets the 1-1-3 code. Very rarely is there actually an injector failure. I'd clear the codes and maybe yank the 25amp fuse to clear the ECU's memory of the bad O2 sensor.

I never lent much credence to the injector fault notion-- those injectors are surprisingly rugged, but I didn't see the potential interplay between the fuel trim adjustment and the injector pulse width right away.

What slowed me down initially was the disbelief associated with seeing the high voltages on the 02 sensor. I also never managed to generate any of those classic mixture codes (231 and 232), although I did set a 212 by unplugging the sensor lead to the ECU. It was really just the chance happening of me pulling too hard in the cold and disconnecting the sensor from the ECU, resulting in a near instant improvement in running.

There did seem to be a periodicity to the hesitation and idle surges, which I now interpret as the ECU trying to "close the loop" and take the 02 information into account before giving up and going back to "open loop" mode.

The 113 probably came from the ECU trying to modulate the pulse width on the injector signals in light of the bizarre information it was receiving from the funky sensor and ending up "out of bounds" on the values.

Happily, this whole fiasco cost less than $130, and the tow ($63) will be reimbursed by my insurance company. The combination of brickboard brains and cheap pick-and-pull parts really made the difference!

I wish more people would post back like you have with results. Chances are someone will benefit from the information you have shared. Thanks.
