Hey Guys,
I'm looking to add a little more power to my S90.
I thought I once saw an ECU upgrade for the S90, but I can no longer find it.
Are there any ECU upgrades for it? I would like to start there first.
Any info would be great.
Thanks in advance.

I'm very happy with the '94 cams I put in my '96 wagon! No other changes required.

Get early cams from 92-94 960 for 20 more hp. Forget about the loss of low end torque. That was just volvo advertising which has been repeated over and over on this board. The main difference in low end torque between early and later cars was the switch from 3.31 to the later 3.73 differential ratio, not the cams. You already have the 3.73 so you get the best of both worlds with early cams.

There is not much you can do with a chip in a normally aspirated car.
The only thing is to advance the timing and richen up the mixture, maybe.
Remember you already have to run premium gas, according to the book.
The early cams add top end power at the expense of some low end power.
Adding a turbo or two to an engine whose compression ratio is already high is an exercise in learning how detonation can blow up the engine. Check out the CR on the 5 cyl engines. The low boost engines have less CR than the NA engine, and the T5 high boost engines have even less CR. Of course if you added oil squirters and low compression pistone, the results would be impressive. So would the price!
I do agree that ensuring the intake has no restrictions and no hot air coming in would help. Avoid the "cold air intake" accessories, because you already have one.
17 inch wheels can be very heavy. That equals slower acceleration because they have to accelerated up to speed. And if the circumference of the tires is more than the stock tires, that causes slower acceleration as well.

Is the only source that I know. Question is they show the unit for 960 95-97 but not the SV90. There might be something different between the two or it might just be a typo.

PowerChip makes one, but I've never heard of anyone that even has one... just under $500. But you'll need to run premium (93 Octane) fuel to make use of it.

You can also get cams from a '92-'94 960 and swap them in... a little less low end torque, but you get a lot more in the top end.
Maybe modify your airbox so the thermostatic flap isn't stuck sucking in hot air? Or even route some custom tubing to draw in a little more cold air from the front. Also, maybe have a custom exhaust fabbed up.. something I'll probably be doing myself to mine this summer.
I used to have something from SCT that said they sold an ECU upgrade with the cams... don't know where it is now, or how much they charged.

Here's Powerchip's response:
The reason the 1998 Volvo S90 is not on our web-site is that we have never done one.
We are therefore not 100% sure if we can do it or not.
If we can do the car or not, depends on what ECU is fitted in the car. If the ECU in the S90 is the same as in the 960, we can indeed do the car. We would need the ECU at our office, in order to determine if we can do your car or not.
It is very likely that your car uses the same type ECU as the Volvo 960.
If we can upgrade your car, the price for the upgrade will be the same as for the Volvo 960.
Please let us know if you have got any further questions.

Does anyone know if the ECU setup for the S90 is the same as the 960?
I would love to know.
Thanks again.

The 95's used Motronic 1.8 (OBDI) and I believe Volvo switched to Motronic 4.4 (OBDII) in 1996. I know our 98 is 4.4.

THANK YOU!! I couldn't remember where I saw it last, and this is the site.
I'm going to reach out to them because I feel like the S90's ECU might be different for some reason.

No problem. Let me know if you find anything out, I'm still curious as well.

TWIN TURBO!!!!
Run one off of 1-2-3 and the other off of 4-5-6. Due to the firing order they pull evenly. then you can run an unmatched pair so you can have one turbo run low end power and the other run higher end power. (always wanted to do that! just never had the $$$$$$$$)
Good luck!

oh, I went back and read your post. You said a little more power, not eat yellow bird power. sorry.
Good luck anyway!!

Yeah, twin turbo power would be great, but costly.
Plus....I'm haven't done any major mechanical work on a car before.
I figured a chip would be a good start.

My 97 is really the same car as yours-I found a few extra hp by doing a couple of things-first I removed the air filter box and gutted the flap that lets hot air from the engine in and replace the air snorkle from the front of the car with a peice of ducting from Home Depot-this increase the air coming into the air box-and you could feel that by the seat of the pants as soon as we went back out on the road-next I took the cam cover off and the cams have three bolts that have elongated slots in the gears for the timeing belt-I loosened
up the intake bolts and advanced the cam about half of the amount that was there. Then I did the same to the exhaust cam. The cars been like this now for around three years and runs fine and is much better than when stock.

Hi -
Can you do a post with a picture of your modified air intake tubing? I like that idea, and Home Depot is nearby. Also, the SOP test for more power is a good one, too.
Thanks,
Bob
