240 Oil pan needed 200

Car has been leaking a little oil from the drain plug ever since I took it to a "quickie" oil change place. I thought they left the washer off b/c the plug was tight. Well no such luck, they screwed up the threads somehow and I think I'll need to replace the whole pan. Anyone have one lying around they'd part with? Thanks.

I would have to guess that you're not the first to have this problem. And, if you were, I'd bet you could come up with a better solution than replacing the whole oil pan. Replacing the oil pan is one big job, and at the very least, it's not something you'd have to do right away. Just gave the local NAPA auto parts store a call and learned that they stock several sizes of oversized, self-tapping plugs just for this purpose. [NAPAonline]

Good luck with it!

Did you try a new washer? I am pretty sure they are copper crush washers that are supposed to be replaced every time you remove the plug. Mind you I have always reused the washer without problems. It would be a lot cheaper and easier than changing the oil pan.

I think you can also get the drain hole rethreaded if the threads really are damaged. Changing the oil pan is a project I would avoid if at all possible. Not a fun job with the engine in the car.

Crush Washer 200

There is just an issue with reusing old crush washer which I also do. After some time you need to tighten the plug more and more as the seal is not strong enough.I tightened the tranny fill plug so much that it has refused to open and I in my frustration rounded off that plug further sealing its fate. Had I used fresh washer for that or tried to anneal it ,the plug would have survived.

Gopesh
