Okay, the solid yellow wire goes on spade A or Spade B? 200 1990

I did the odometer gear replacement (mine was missing teeth around a third its circumferance), but being very clever, I took a digital photo of the cluster wiring before I jerked it all out so I'd remember where everything went. Not.

The photo shows everthing beautifully except the two spade connectors slightly above and to the right of the L-shaped connector that runs the speedo. The two homeless wires in the cluster are red-and-white striped one that would go to the tachometer if I had one (it will remain dangling), and a solid yellow that goes to either the upper or lower of the two spade connectors (does this power the cruise control - it was factory installed).

Anyone know which spade it should go to? Can anyone confirm that one spade should remain open?

I've had that cluster out so many times today. Oh, and the odo still doesn't work either though it counts nicely when turned by hand on the bench! Related to the wire confusion perhaps -everything else in cluster including lights works fine.

Thanks in advance for any help.

It definitely does not attach to the spedometer. The ribbon wire is the only one that should plug into the spedometer. The spedometer gets its power from pins that insert into the electronics board. Make sure all of those are all plugged into their sockets properly. I think there are 4 pins, three for the spedometer and one for the service light (I took this pin out so I don't have to reset the service light).

The double lug with the rubber band over it is the spedometer output for cruise control. If you have cruise the wire should be black/blue.

The yellow wire is most likely for one of the warning lights. Put your key to the run position. The yellow wire should be for whatever light is not working. It seems to me that it might be the airbag light wire, but thats just a guess from memory.

Is it a "yellow" wire... or a yellow/red wire? Do you have any accessory gauges?

In my 1990 240, there's the speedo cable, the half moon and circular connectors, a red and white tachometer connector, and a yellow/red wire for either the OD indicator (auto transmission) or upshift indicator (manual transmission). This yellow/red wire plugs into the cluster on the side closest to the radio. For the life of me I can't remember a purely yellow wire.

With everything plugged in, does the SRS light still light up?

I had the cluster out of my 86 240 yesterday, no cruze control. I will describe the locations in reference to looking at the front of the cluser. There is female spade in the lower left between the speedo and the clock that is disconnected. There is a dual male spade to the upper right of the speedo that was disconected and a plastic ring around it. The last spade is a single male in the lower right with a yellow wire connected ..

Good luck!

Sorry spadeA/spadeB, this I do not know. What I do know is the one that had no wire will have no witness marks from its installation.

There should be two spade connectors near the Odometer, that are actually connected two each other. I cant remember if its a solid yellow or yellow with red stripe wire that mates to it. If youre unsure wait for someone to post with exactly the right combo

A smaller (3/16?) spade connector with in the lower left corner of the cluster, has a plastic insulator on the harness spade.

I learned the hard way about 7 years ago, and labeled each connector with peel and stick connector numbers.

If your unsure wait for someone to post with exactly the right combo. I have to pull my cluster, to change one of the illumination bulbs, just waiting for delivery from FCP, if you haven't gotten the answer by then, Ill email you

Solid orange is for cruise control.
Goes to either of the two male spade connectors at upper left of speedometer.
(Viewing from the back of cluster)
These are actually one piece of metal, either of the two will do.

Striped yellow-orange or yellow-red goes on male spade at lower left corner of cluster.
(Again, viewing from back of cluster - so that is near car's center-line)

Striped red + white is for tach, and as you wrote, don't hook it up to anything else.

As for things not working - the speedo connector has a wire that powers other items in the cluster. Have a look into the wire end connector and clean it with electr contact cleaner. Also maybe bend the contact fingers just a bit to grab better where they grip the contacts on the circuit board.

Sounds Right On - Thanks All 200 1990

Except the "orange" wire is a egg-yolk yellow - I imagine that's just a model year difference from your '89s, as I have no orange wires outside of the full-moon and half-moon connectors. I'll try fiddling with the speedo connector to see if that's the reason for the continued non-working of the odo. Unfortunately I have to wait until the weekend to get back out to my garage where I keep the car.

Hi,

In the '91 WDM, yellow is the color for the cruise connection to the speedo output called the VSS or vehicle speed sensor signal. The output is shared by the ECU, but through the full round plug, but I believe the cruise gets it through the double spade (either side is OK) next to the right turn signal lamp.

If at any time the red/white wire from the ignition coil was connected there while running, you can kiss the speedometer chip goodbye. I don't know whether this kills odo and speedo or just odo; you might check with Sven's Maintainer on that. Or visit my page http://cleanflametrap.com and take the "bottom of page" link down to a couple speedometer pages, showing both '89 and '91 units, kind of bracketing your model year.
