Finding TDC Top Dead Center on a 940 Turbo 900

Assuming the vibration dampner hasn't started to "creep" (outer portion move in relation to the inner portion along the rubber seperating them) you can do the following:

1. Rotate the crank until the notch on the dampner is at zero on the timing marks on the timing belt cover.

2. Remove enough fastners on the upper part of the timing belt cover and see if the tick mark (dot) on the cam gear is at the top and aligns with the mark on the face of the back portion of the timing belt cover.

a. if the marks line up as described you are on TDC of the compression stroke.

b. if the cam mark is not at the top and aligned with the mark on the cover rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees and make sure the notch on the pulley lines up with zero. At that point the cam gear mark should be lined up with the cover mark and you are at TDC on the compression stroke.

If the marks do not line up as described the vibration dampner has started to "creep" as described above.

At that point carefully rotating the crankshaft with something (piece of stiff copper wire perhaps; something that won't damage the cylinder wall if you get careless)in the sparkplug hole will communicate the piston movement and you can get it very close to TDC and check the cam gear mark for proper position.
