Seat Rail Question 200

I finally picked up a wagon after looking for one for quite some time. Now, I'm kinda big guy and I need my seats a little further back. In the wagon I have the seat all the way to the back and I'm not as comfortable as I am in the 242. Now, my question is... are 242 rails different from 244/245 rails (i.e., will swapping in 242 rails make my seat go back further???) I'm not in the mood to take out my 242 seats to find out, so if anyone could supply an answer, that'd be great!

Thanks in advance!

Seat Rail Question 200

Good morning,
I have about fifteen seats in the garage and I take the interior out of every 240 I do, but I ran out to the garage to refresh my memory before attempting to clear this up. The seat rails consist of several different sections. There are the sliders that bolt to the floor, the supports that bolt to the rails, and on the driver's seat, the height adjuster that goes between the supports and the seat frame. There is no provision for adjustment of the rails on the floor. There is only one set of studs and holes at the front of the seat platform that bridges the floor pan and since the back legs are semi-vertical, they have only one "selection". The supports are what is adjustable. They are bolted to the sliders in the adjuster rails and yes, there are two sets of holes. The fore-aft adjustment is less than an inch (slightly) and the default position from the factory is the rear-most setting. I've only found one seat in five years that was set forward. Previous owner was 4'6" tall. Dave Shannon has described a way to get full seat travel in a wagon with the back seat folded down. That involves removing the lower cushion which otherwise stops the seat from traveling all the way back. The only way to get significantly better leg room in the 2s is to relocate the seat further back with a modification. If you e-mail me at dpsam@sbcglobal.net, I'll be happy to send you info for some mods that will do this. Not a big job. I've modified a couple of cars for people over 6'.
Regards,

Dave

Seat Rail Question 200

My first Volvo was a 1975 245 DL, purchased from the original owner. He was a shorter-than-average guy, and he explained to me that the seat rail bolts could bolt through one of two holes, and he had changed to have the seat far forward. I am 6ft+, so he really made things wasy for me to get the seat nicely adjusted.

I believe that the furthest back holes are the factory setting. Your PO may have changed that, so have a look. I don't recall whether the seat must be removed or not, might be a good idea to see all that's possible.

Have you tried adjusting the front and rear up-and-down settings? Each has a igh, center, low position, and obviously the seat cushion elevation and tilt are changeable. Mine are set with the front adjuster in the middle, the rear on the lowest.

BTW, that seat up-and-down rack can be installed on the passenger seat. The holes are there, used by bolts which make changing the adjustments requires removing the seat. I have done that on all my 240s.

Good Luck,

Bob

Seat Rail Question 200

I have never owned a 2-dr, so I can't say about a difference in that regard. But...

first, have you checked the fore and aft seat height adjustments -- they make a small difference in how far back it "seems" to be?

second, I once got a car whose seat was peculiarly (compared to my other cars)far back -- and I mean far! I usually have my seats slid back as far they can go -- but on this car I had to pull the seat almost all the way forward.
So I took off the seat and discovered that it sat on a special rail that, in turn, sat on the stock rail. That intermediate rail fit the bottom, OEM rail perfectly as if it was the seat's rail, and the seat fit on top of it perfectly as well -- but because of the fittings on the upper and lower sides of that intermediate rail, the seat was positioned exactly 3 inches (as I recall) farther back. It was machined precisely, and it seemed to me to be Volvo accessory that would be dealer-installed to accommodate tall drivers. Maybe you can still get one?

Here is the only thing I have ever seen on that.

To daveshan and check this out. Do not know if this is of any use. But heck won't hurt to look.
