The crankshaft is made of really hard steel.
This means that if it cracks, it breaks, right then and not sometime later.

Not to worry.
I've read about breaking the crank with a impact wrench, although I've always used one to remove the front pulley (harmonic balancer) with no problem.

I suppose that if a inexperienced mechanic with a big impact wrench and a lot of air pressure tried, he could snap the end off of a crankshaft.
That would be a big "Ahhhh Sh******"!
