Not looking to open a can of worms? Why'd you post it in the 240 section? :-)

If you want safety, newer model is better. The 240 is the pioneer, but Volvo's have gotten safer with each newer model, especially in the side impact category. The 240 is 1970's technology.

740/940's fared a little better than the 240 overall in crash tests, but starting in '93 the 940 (and 850) got SIPS (side impact protection system) which is a pretty ingenious solution: It's not a side airbag, but rather a beam integrated in the front seats that transmits crash energy into a "crumple zone" in the middle of the car. Much safer, and the 240 can't compete here.

I love 240's, and have owned a handful of them, but the next car I get will be a 745 or 945 hands down (740/940 are essentially identical). 1990-95 non-turbo, 4-cyl, and you almost can't go wrong if it's well maintained. Read the FAQ. The 740/940 has all of the 240's simplicity with much fewer drawbacks.
