Diagnostic help needed: 90 744 GL, check engine light 700 1990

Hi,

I bought a 500 dollar 1990 740 GL last week. The car has 225000 miles and no records. (I bought this car as a stopgap driver (that I may keep... LOL) because I hit a deer 2 weeks ago at 50 mph in my 95 Porsche 993 C4 and I won't get that car back until January). This is my 4th Volvo I've owned... I love the things.

The symptoms are these: periodically, when the car is fully warmed up, the check engine light comes on. Driveability is unaffected. The car starts fine, warm or cold. The light also goes out periodically. At the same time the light comes on, my passenger-side speakers mute WAY down. Related?

The car has the REX1 ignition and Regina Fuel system.

I ran the diagnostic codes. I got nothing but 1-1-1 from socket 6 (the ignition). From socket 2, I got 2-2-1, 3-2-1, and 2-2-1 again.

A few more data points: the car is getting TERRIBLE mileage (although I'm running the first tank), I'm estimating about 12 mpg. The O2 sensor looks 'newer'. I checked for vacuum leaks and fixed a couple. No change. New air filter.

Last item: wen I ran the car through the high-pressure wash, I could hear water trickling and saw a few drips on the passenger side footwell. (I resealed the windshield with silicon caulk last weekend). I'm hoping the computer hasn't gotten wet and corroded. It's been bone dry here for days though, and the light comes and goes.

What say ye? Radio suppression relay? Bad wiring? Something else?

    Check the O2 sensor type (edit/update) 700 1990

    The 2-2-1 is O2 sensor related, and is the cause of the Check Engine Light. It may also be causing the bad mileage if the "newer" looking O2 is the wrong (Bosch type) sensor.

    Look at the leads at the firewall (2-pin plug), if the wires are both White [I think] it's wrong. In any case, the Titania-based sensor that the Queen demands has Red and White wires, plus the Black signal wire.

    These sensors are made only by NTK, and cost about $99 plus shipping at Sparkplugs.com.
    Click the Applications FIND button and you'll see your car listed.

    Ignore the 3-2-1 code. It's the residual effect of a Cold Start fix for '89 and '90 Regina FI. Post back for details if wanted.

      Well, I've got the wrong 02 sensor in there for sure. The wiring harness in the engine compartment is correct (3 wires), but I peeked underneath the car and the O2 sensor that's in there has one wire... somebody spliced a one-wire sensor into the harness. presumably the heating wires are taped off and dangling in space somewhere.

      Thanks for the advice, at least I know that investing the hundred bucks now will be paid back by the third tankful of gas...

        Replaced the 02 sensor with the proper type today. Check engine light is out.

        Now maybe I'll get better than 12 mpg, too! :D

    Hi Thaddeus,

    Be glad it wasn't a moose you hit!

    You might check your alternator brushes/and output volts at the battery
    My car went crazy when I drove down the street without the alternator belt.
    Low voltage will drive the computer nuts.

    Wish I could help more with the Volvo but I am still lusting over your 911. I have an 86 911 with a busted trans and have been looking at a C4 to replace my Audi A4 and 911.

    How does the C4 do in the snow? My A4 could hold 110 in 1.5 feet of snow. Think you could keep up?

      The C4 is my daily driver 365 days a year here in Minnesota, and does GREAT in the snow. I'm that rare breed of Porsche owner who believes cars are meant to be driven, not treated like holy relics...

      he only caveat with the C4 in blizzards is, the clearance is low, so you have to avoid getting high-centered on snow ridges. Otherwise, it just goes. :)

        I have found that 911s tend to not do so well if they sit! I am just a bit more cautious after only owning mine for 36 hours and nailing some black ice then the poor schmuck that was driving next to me!(oops)
