Hi John,
Some weird set of faults.
Was everything working and suddenly went sour?
Do the idiot lights come on when you turn the key to "II" ?
Do the Directionals work?
Do the instrument lights and rheostat (Dimmer) work?
The instrument cluster is easy to remove in the 89 740.
I'd take it out and see if the three connectors are fully seated.
(Especially the 7 pin connector, if it's loose or off).
From what you say, I wouldn't start with the fuel sender. The problem is
likely at the instrument cluster or the connectors there.
