Instrument cluster testing 89 740 700

Hi all, I have an 89 740 Turbo wagon. The voltage gage, turbo gage, and tach work, but the temp gage, fuel gage, clock and speedo don't. Is there a way to check the voltage or resistance at the connectors to the gages to see if they are receiving what they are supposed to? Is there a way to ground the instruments to see if they function at all? I've been told to pull up the carpeting in the back to see if the sending unit in the tank is grounded correctly, but I can't even seem to do that right. Is it under the folding seat, or right behind the middle seat? Do I need to undo any clips or screws to pull up the carpeting? The ground behind the left kick panel checks good. The fuel and temp gages twitch for a split second when the key is turned on and raise just a millimeter or so, but don't move beyond that. The ABS light comes on at about five MPH, but it's been cold and snowy/wet here, so I haven't been able to get under the car to check out the speed sensor. Any help you could give me would be great. Thanks, John
