You have to push harder than you would expect. Then it gives way suddenly. The first time I did one I thought I had broken it, but the button popped back up and the light was out for another 5000 miles.

Good job on the fishing expedition. It is possible to take out the cluster, remove one of the blanking plates, (or the voltmeter if its a Turbo) and shake the plug out, but your method seems quicker and easier.
