Quick Dizzy/Timing Question. 120-130

I was checking my timing on my engine yesterday and noticed that at any speed above 1500 rpms (approximate since none of my tachs give me accurate readings) I completely lose the timing marks. Things advance well beyond 30 BTC the ticks and are invisible with my timing light.

Is that normal? I hear about a "maximum advance" of 27 BTC, but I think this goes way beyond that. It could be my lousy timing light, but could this indicated a problem with the advance in my dizzy?

My dizzy is a cast-iron -009 that does actually "spring" back with the basic twist-test. I *have* removed and oiled it several times when working on the points/timing issues I've had.

You want a maximum advance in the range of 37°, NOT 27°.
If you have a flexible ruler or tape measure you can get under the car and
make some more marks around the pulley. I'd put one every 10° for a start.
A sharpie marker might work OK if the pulley is clean.

      Quick Dizzy/Timing Question. 120-130

You're saying that I *may* be within my normal advance range (37 BTC not 27 BTC) but cannot tell because there are no tick marks past 30 btc?

Fair enough. I'll just take one of my spare pulleys and mark a few extra 10 degree marks with a triangular file.

The question remains, if I am losing all relationship to my timing marks when reving the motor - does that indicate a problem with my advance mechanism?

You find that a sharpie is visible to the timing light? I've been using a piece of chalk...

Not having ever seen what it is doing it's hard for me to say much about
your distributor. But your timing should advance to a maximum of about 37° and
remain fairly steady at that point. Random flashes usually indicate spurious
tracks in the distributor cap, sparks from one wire to another or other interference.
If the pulley is shiny and light-colored you can see the mark of a sharpie.
I also use chalk. Doesn't last long though....

My favorite marker is a small container of touch-up paint--the kind you find in parts stores for factory colors--they have a brush inside and dry quickly.
