Strong smell of gasoline suddenly 200 1987

Novice here, Ive been so happy with my 240 wag, but just the past few days ive been noticing a strong smell of fuel inside the car while driving and i cant figure it out. I havent noticed anything else different. We have no noticable leaks, nothing to indicate a problem. What can i check myself. Would a spark plug cleaning or change make a difference? thats what someone suggested i do. any info at all would be most helpful! thanks.

I would bet on a rusted fuel sender unit- they are notorious for rust on wagons.

    First thing I would do... 200 1987

I offer this advice because 6 months ago, my 245 wagon developed a gas smell seemingly out of nowhere.

My hunch: Does is smell like it's coming from the ventilation system when you drive? Where the AC comes out in the middle of the dash?

First, with the car running, or as soon as you smell the gas, pull over. Leave the car running. Open the hood and look for the fuel pressure regulator. Here's a link to a photo of a 240 engine

You are looking pretty much smack in the middle of that picture for the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Has a black tube running out of it. Top of your engine, about the size of a small 8oz can of tomato paste. My hunch is that with the car running, you will see this "wet" and leaking fuel. The diaphram inside of it goes.
About $45 bucks. Get the Bosch made one if you can. 5 minute fix with a screw driver and wrench.

Looking at this after the car is off might not show you the leak, as the fuel will evaporate very quickly with the engine hot. With it running, you will see it leaking if it's the problem. Replace it immediately if that's the case.

    Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about the poison gasoline fumes saturating your vehicle. I myself just fixed a leak yesterday.

After a nap, you should go outside to your car and smell at each tire. The tire that smells the most like gas is where the leak is at. Most likely you will get the most odor at the drivers rear wheel, that is where the fuel pump is at and a leaking pump is common.

Otherwise continue to search. The leak will only aggravate and may leave you stranded (and sickened).

Changing spark plugs is not likely to cure the gas smell. Look things over carefully under the hood, under the car where the pump and filter are located (driver's side under the back seat) and under the gas tank. Look for wet spots or staining. You may have to lift the plywood floorboard (two phillips screws located in front of the lift up section) and prop it up with a screwdriver or whatever is handy to examine the area where the "tank unit" is installed--I've seen many Volvos with the unit rusted enough to leak (especially after a fill-up). Also lift the rear right side panel behind the wheel well to expose the fill tube and tank vent hoses.

thank you, this gives me somewhere to start, it makes sense about the fill up leaking, i am notorious for keeping the tank pretty empty and my husband recently filled it up for me. Ill check it out.

Did the odor appear after the tank was filled? Dan

okay, so i pulled the smelly car outof the garage and immediatly could see a puddle of gas where it pooled when i started it. But looking at it with the engine off in the driveway-nothing, so i started it and had a peek underneath and it was spitting gas from the general area of the left rear tire-fuel pump area. I couldnt get a proper look at where the gas was spitting out of, but just a fine spray coming out. Im thinking i dont want to drive to a repair shop and waste my precious gas along the way-but im not sure i can handle this repair on my own.

I'm surprised you ever smelled gas at all while driving. Well that really is decent news that you can see it coming from underneath the left front tire...ie, the pump area itself. Take it to a shop and have them run the car while up on a rack. Bet it won't take them but 1 minute to see the problem. I'll also bet it shouldn't be more than an hour's labor charge and a small part fee (filter-pump line) to fix it. Say, about $100 or less....

You need to find out where the leak is, quite possibly a split in the plastic fuel line between the pump and filter. It may be just a loose connection. Messing with the connections can get ugly fast so beware. I have found that an electric impact wrench works real well getting connections apart. Dan (pageda, not paul Driver of Inga)??

            Hello,

The repair is pretty vicious, I like to wear a charcoal respirator, It really helps even when you're lying next to a puddle of gasoline.

The pump is quite available, and it makes sense to replace it with a Bosch pump as originally equipped to provide reliable service in the future.

I run a fuel pump that was originally equipped on a car from the junkyard.

You should wait for the gasoline to evaporate before making a visual inspection of the area; the pump may not be at fault. Loose clamps and worn hoses also cause leaks.
