1966 122s Engine Type? 120-130

I have a 1966 122S, 2-door. So I guess it is a 130. I'm trying to figure out what B18 engine is in this car (18A or 18B). I haven't been able to find any help in website history lists, etc. The specifications for tune ups are, according to the manuals I have, rather different.

The cars ID number (on the firewall plate) is 13244 VF. This is followed (next number down)by 174945. (As far as I know, the original engine is in the car). B18 is forged in the engine block. Across the side are the numbers 4968 21 10912. Further down on the engine block is KB6 418201.

I'm particularly interested in knowing what the timing setting of this engine should be. Haynes lists the B18A at 21-23 degree BTDC. The B18B is listed at 17-18 degree BTDC. So what is it to be?

I'm trying to get a WEBER DGV (water choke)carb dialed in, and there is some chatter that ignition should be advanced a bit to make it run properly, but I need to know where to start. Thanks.

    You have a left hand steered 1966 P130 in 122S edition for the US market. For type designation breakdown, chassisnumbers, engine numbers and types, etc. please refer to http://www.volvoamazonpictures.se (click on Production).

    The original engine in your car is a B18D (the B18A was not available on US cars and the B18B came in 1967 on the 123GT and in 1968 on the 122S). The ignition setting on the 95-100hp B18D is 17-19 degrees BTDC (earlier 90hp B18D have 22-24 BTDC).

    Brgds,

    Fredrik

      Frederik,

      Thanks, I appreciate your help in getting the engine type figured out. Also thanks for the Volvoamazon site reference. I appreciate it.

    Can't recommend the Weber DGV but if the car came with 2 HS6 carbs it is B18B and
    if it came with only one, it is a B18A. Very few (probably none) with B18A engines
    were sold new in the US.
    Set the ignition to wherever it runs best!
    Retarded is bad - reduces power and makes the engine and especially the exhaust
    system run hot.

    As you're in the USA I'd say it was extremely unlikely that the engine was a B18A. The A is a soft tune engine with a single carb.
    Your ID reads 1=saloon,3= 2 door, 2= B18B
    174945= chassis number
    10912= engine number.

      I just found http://www.vlvworld.com/indexframe.html?engspecs.html which gives the most complete info. on this that I've found. My hunch is that the engine is a B18B, "dual SU HS6 carburetors, high compression version" so the timing should be set at 17-19 degrees BTDC @1500 RPM. If I advance it to 20-22 degrees, is there any threat of long term damage?

        Probably not. Try it and see if it knocks under heavy load at medium speeds.
        If it does, it is too far advanced.
